Service to aid childhood cancer patients varies from club to club. The
Johnson City Zone clubs provide a birthday cake to every child receiving
cancer treatments. The Optimist Club of West Knoxville provides hats to
the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital Hat Tree. Children receiving
treatments can take a hat from the three when they leave the oncology
unit.

The first full week of May is set aside for the opportunity to inspire
respect for the law among young people.

Optimist Youth Club Purposes,
Objects and Missions
The purposes of the club parallel the purposes of the parent club, The
Optimist Club, and they are: To develop optimism as a philosophy of life;
To promote an active interest in good government and civic affairs; To
inspire respect for law; To promote patriotism and work for international
accord and friendship among all people; to aid and encourage the
development of youth, in the belief that the giving of one’s self in
service to others will advance the wellbeing of humankind, community life
and the world.
The objects of the club are to provide opportunities for members
individually and collectively to participate in community services
activities, develop leadership abilities and prepare for responsible roles
in society.
The mission of the Optimist Youth Club is to foster an optimistic way of
life, through a network of Club members, dedicated to the full development
of their potential in order to provide ever-expanding service to the
school, community and the world.
The Octagon, a symbol of strength and unity, stands for the eight
characteristics held in high esteem by Optimist Youth Club members: Honor,
Respect, Friendship, Diligence, Thrift, Work, Growth and Value. See the Optimist
International JOOI Club site.
